Many think that the key difference is that cologne is masculine, but the true difference between perfume and cologne is how long the smell lasts. Perfume has a higher concentration of fragrance oils, resulting in the smell lasting longer than cologne.

What types of fragrance does Ulta carry?

What is the difference between perfume, eau de parfum, and eau de toilette?

The difference comes down to how much fragrance oil is in the formula, which affects how strong the scent is and how long it lasts. Parfum (or extrait) has the highest concentration, typically 20 to 30 percent, and lasts the longest on skin. Eau de parfum (EDP) runs 15 to 20 percent and is the most popular everyday option. Eau de toilette (EDT) sits around 5 to 15 percent and tends to be lighter and more affordable. Eau de cologne (EDC) is the lightest, usually 2 to 4 percent, and works well for a fresh, casual scent. How do I find a fragrance that suits me?

Start with the scent families that appeal to you: floral, fresh, fruity and citrus, sweet, warm and spicy, or woody and earthy. From there, think about when and where you want to wear it. Lighter, fresher scents tend to work well for daytime and warmer months. Warmer, richer scents are often better for evenings or cooler weather. What is fragrance layering?

Fragrance layering is the practice of combining two or more scented products to build a more complex, longer-lasting scent on your skin. A common starting point is applying a scented body lotion in the same fragrance family as your perfume, then spritzing the perfume on top. You can also layer two complementary fragrances directly on your skin or clothing.
