A post-workout skin care routine is a short set of steps designed to remove sweat, sunscreen, makeup, and surface bacteria from skin after exercise, without over-cleansing or stripping the skin barrier. The goal is to get your skin clean and comfortable so you can move on with your day, whether you have access to a full shower or only a gym sink.
If you need to clean up quickly without a shower, wash your hands first, blot your face with a clean towel, and use micellar water or a gentle facial cleanser at the sink. Pat dry, apply a lightweight moisturizer, and reapply sunscreen if you are heading outdoors. Change out of damp clothing and shower as soon as you are able.
At Ulta Beauty, we recommend keeping your post-workout routine simple enough to follow consistently. A small set of products you reach for every session is more effective than a larger collection you skip when time runs short. Here is how to build that routine, adjust it for your skin type, and skip the steps that can wait.
What does your skin need after a workout?
Exercise leaves a layer of sweat, oil, sunscreen, makeup, and bacteria on the skin's surface, collected from your own body and from contact with shared equipment, towels, and hands. Your first goal is to remove that buildup gently. Your second is to keep your skin comfortable with light hydration and daytime sun protection when needed.
Focus on these priorities:
Cool down: Give your body 5 to 10 minutes to slow active sweating before applying leave-on products. Moisturizer and sunscreen applied to very wet skin can slide around and feel uncomfortable.
Blot instead of rub: Press a clean towel against damp skin rather than dragging it across your face.
Cleanse based on what is on your skin: A bare face after a light workout may need less cleansing than skin covered in water-resistant sunscreen or full makeup.
Add moisture back: Choose a moisturizer that feels comfortable rather than heavy or sticky.
Protect exposed skin: Reapply sunscreen according to its label if you will be outside after your workout.
Change damp clothing: Fresh, dry fabric reduces the chance of irritation while you wait to shower.
The goal of post-workout cleansing is not to make skin feel tight or squeaky. Tightness after washing usually signals that the cleanser, water temperature, or technique is too harsh for your skin type.
Ulta Beauty's post-workout skin care routine
This routine works whether you have access to a full locker room or only a sink. Adjust the cleanser and moisturizer textures to suit your skin type and the intensity of your workout.
Let your skin cool down: Wait 5 to 10 minutes until heavy sweating slows. Applying moisturizer or sunscreen while your face is still very wet can make products slide around and feel uncomfortable.
Wash your hands: Clean hands before touching your face, especially if you handled shared weights, mats, machines or door handles. If soap and water are not nearby, use hand sanitizer and let it dry before starting your face routine.
Blot away excess sweat: Use a clean, soft towel and press it lightly against your skin. Avoid scrubbing, which can leave hot, recently exercised skin feeling irritated.
Mist with a hypochlorous acid spray (optional): A quick spray of hypochlorous acid over your face after blotting is one of the easiest things you can do for post-workout skin. Hypochlorous acid is a gentle, naturally occurring antimicrobial that helps neutralize sweat-borne bacteria on the skin's surface before you cleanse. It is fragrance-free, safe for all skin types including sensitive, and requires no rubbing or rinsing. Hold the bottle about 6 to 8 inches from your face and mist lightly, then let it air dry before moving on to your next step. If you are in a rush and skipping the full cleanse, this step does more than a dry blot alone.
Remove makeup and sunscreen if needed: If you wore makeup or a water-resistant sunscreen, start with micellar water or another makeup-removing formula. Use a fresh cotton pad or reusable round and stop once visible residue is gone rather than repeatedly wiping the same area.
Cleanse your face: Use lukewarm water and a gentle facial cleanser, then rinse thoroughly. Browse facial cleansers at Ulta Beauty to find options such as gels, creams, foams and cleansing balms. If you used micellar water and cannot rinse, follow the product directions. Some formulas are designed for no-rinse use, while others feel better when rinsed away.
Pat your skin dry: Use a clean towel rather than the one that sat on a machine or gym floor. Leave your skin feeling comfortable and soft, not rubbed until it feels tight.
Apply a lightweight moisturizer: Smooth on a thin layer while your skin is no longer dripping. Gel creams and light lotions feel comfortable when you are still warm, while a richer cream may suit skin that tends to feel dry after cleansing.
Reapply sunscreen when it is daytime: If you will be exposed to daylight, apply sunscreen to exposed skin according to the label. Chemical sunscreen formulas generally need 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure to reach full effectiveness. Mineral sunscreens based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide work immediately on application. Remember to cover areas such as your ears, neck, chest and the backs of your hands when they are uncovered.
Change and shower when you can: Swap damp tops, sports bras, socks and other close-fitting clothes for dry ones. When a shower is available, wash sweaty areas with a body cleanser and rinse well, paying attention to places where clothing or gear traps moisture.

1 of 6: Best Post-Workout Gentle Facial Cleanser
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Hydrating Non-Foaming Cleanser | $16.99
Shop CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser at Ulta →
The benchmark for post-workout cleansing without stripping your skin. CeraVe's Hydrating Facial Cleanser is non-foaming, so it removes sweat, sunscreen and light makeup without disrupting the skin barrier. The formula contains three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid, restoring moisture while it cleans. Because it does not depend on hot water to activate, it works just as well at a gym sink as it does in a full shower.
Fragrance-free and non-comedogenic, this cleanser works across skin types. For post-workout use, a small amount on damp skin followed by a thorough lukewarm rinse is enough to clear the surface without leaving skin feeling tight.
Key specs: Ceramide-Enriched · Hyaluronic Acid · Fragrance-Free · Non-Comedogenic · Non-Foaming
2 of 6: Best Post-Workout Makeup Remover
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water
Micellar Cleansing Water | $20.99
Shop Bioderma Sensibio H2O at Ulta →
When a sink is not available or you wore a full face of makeup to the gym, micellar water is the bridge between sweaty skin and a proper cleanse. Bioderma Sensibio H2O is the French pharmacy classic for a reason: tiny micellar molecules suspended in a water-based solution lift makeup, sunscreen and sweat from the surface without requiring rinse water or heavy rubbing. The formula contains no alcohol or fragrance and is designed specifically for sensitive skin.
For post-workout use, saturate a cotton pad and press it gently against each section of the face before wiping. One or two passes is usually enough for moderate makeup. Follow with your regular cleanser when you have access to a sink for a complete two-step cleanse.
Key specs: Fragrance-Free · No Alcohol · Sensitive Skin Formula · No-Rinse Use · Gentle Micellar Technology
Ulta Beauty Advisor Tip: Use this before your facial cleanser when you wore water-resistant SPF or long-wear foundation. The micellar water handles the heavy lifting so your cleanser does not have to work as hard.
3 of 6: Best Post-Workout Hypochlorous Acid Spray
Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray
Hypochlorous Acid Facial Mist | $20.00
Shop Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray at Ulta →
Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray is an easy addition to a post-workout skin care routine, especially when you can't cleanse immediately after exercising. Its hero ingredient, hypochlorous acid, is a substance naturally produced by white blood cells and is known for its skin-cleansing and calming properties. The lightweight spray helps remove bacteria, reduce visible redness and calm skin without requiring scrubbing or rinsing.
After a workout, spray it directly onto sweaty or freshly blotted skin and allow it to air dry. The formula can help flush away dirt and debris while refreshing areas prone to post-workout congestion, including the face, chest and back. Because it requires no rinsing, it's particularly convenient to keep in a gym bag for use immediately after exercise or whenever skin needs a quick refresh.
The minimal formula contains just hypochlorous acid, ionized water, sodium chloride and hypochlorite ion. It's formulated for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and is free from fragrance, alcohol, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, oil and talc. It can also be used as often as needed, making it a versatile option beyond the gym for calming redness or refreshing breakout-prone skin.
Key specs: Hypochlorous Acid · Fragrance-Free · Alcohol-Free · No Rinse Required
Ulta Beauty Advisor's Pick: "This is a great gym-bag staple if you don't always have time to cleanse right after a workout. Mist it over areas where sweat tends to sit, like the face, chest or back, let it air dry and follow with the rest of your routine when you're ready."
4 of 6: Best Post-Workout Lightweight Moisturizer
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel Moisturizer | $29.99
Shop Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel at Ulta →
The criteria for a post-workout moisturizer differ from your evening routine. It needs to absorb quickly, feel light on warm skin, and not leave a tacky finish that causes sunscreen or makeup to slide around. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel does all of this. The gel texture is water-based and melts on contact, delivering hyaluronic acid without the weight of a cream. Skin feels plump and hydrated rather than coated.
Oil-free and non-comedogenic, this formula suits warm, post-exercise skin well. It also works as a base layer under sunscreen and makeup, providing enough slip to help both products apply evenly without pilling.
Key specs: Hyaluronic Acid · Oil-Free · Non-Comedogenic · Water Gel Texture · Fragrance-Free · Fast-Absorbing
5 of 6: Best Post-Workout Sunscreen
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen
Oil-Free Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 | $38.00
Shop Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen at Ulta →
Among Ulta Beauty Advisors, sunscreen reapplication is the step customers most often skip after a workout, and the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen makes it much harder to skip. The formula goes on completely clear, feels weightless and leaves no white cast, greasiness or residue. It also acts as a primer, smoothing the look of pores and creating a clean surface for anything applied on top. The SPF 40 broad-spectrum coverage holds up through the warmth and humidity that follows exercise.
Compact enough to fit in a gym kit or a running belt, a small amount covers the face and neck. Reapply at least every two hours when you are outdoors, and again before heading outside after cleaning up post-workout.
Key specs: SPF 40 · Broad-Spectrum · Oil-Free · No White Cast · Primer Finish · Fragrance-Free
Ulta Beauty Advisor Tip: Apply sunscreen as the last step in your post-workout routine, after your skin has cooled and moisturizer has settled. Because the Unseen Sunscreen uses chemical UV filters, apply it 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure to reach full effectiveness.
6 of 6: Best Post-Workout On-the-Go Cleanser
Neutrogena Makeup Removing Cleansing Towelettes
Facial Cleansing Wipes | $7.99
Shop Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes at Ulta →
When a sink is not an option and you need to clear makeup, sweat or sunscreen before heading back into your day, a reliable facial wipe fills the gap. Neutrogena's cleansing towelettes remove water-resistant makeup and long-wear sunscreen in most cases with one or two passes. The textured surface lifts residue without being rough on skin that is already warm and reactive from exercise.
Each wipe comes in a resealable pack, so the last towelette stays as moist as the first. Keep a pack in your gym bag, locker or car. These are a backup, not a replacement for washing your face, but they do their job well until you can get to a sink.
Key specs: Removes Waterproof Makeup · Ophthalmologist-Tested · Hypoallergenic · Resealable Pack · Gentle Formula
Ulta Beauty Advisor Tip: Always follow a wipe with a full cleanse when you have the chance. Wipes remove surface buildup effectively, but a rinse-off cleanser does a more thorough job clearing post-workout residue.
How to adjust your routine for your skin type
The step order stays the same for every skin type. What changes is the texture of the cleanser and moisturizer you choose, and how much cleansing each session actually needs. Pay attention to how your skin feels in the 30 to 60 minutes after washing, not only while the water is running.
Oily or breakout-prone skin
A lightweight gel or foaming cleanser removes the combination of sweat, oil, and sunscreen common after a workout without leaving a heavy residue on skin. Follow with a non-comedogenic, oil-free moisturizer rather than skipping hydration entirely. Cleansing alone can leave oily skin feeling dry, and dehydrated skin often compensates by producing more oil.
A hypochlorous acid spray used immediately after blotting can help address surface bacteria before you reach a sink. This is useful after longer workouts or whenever there is a gap between finishing exercise and washing your face.
If you already use exfoliating acids, retinoids, or other active ingredients in your routine, keep track of how often you apply them in a single day. A post-workout session does not automatically require an additional treatment step.
Dry skin
Choose a cream or lotion cleanser rather than a foaming formula, and use lukewarm water. Apply moisturizer while your skin still feels soft after patting it dry, as this helps the product absorb more effectively.
If cleansing multiple times in a day leaves your face tight or uncomfortable, consider whether each session requires the same level of cleansing. A workout where you wore no makeup and applied no sunscreen may only need a gentle rinse, while a session where you wore both warrants a more thorough cleanse.
Sensitive skin
Keep the routine short and use products your skin has already tolerated well. Fragrance-free formulas are worth prioritizing if you know fragrance causes irritation, though your own skin history is the most reliable guide.
Hypochlorous acid spray is a practical choice for sensitive skin because it is fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and does not require rubbing or rinsing. It can be misted directly onto skin after blotting and left to air dry before any other product is applied.
Avoid introducing a new cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer at the same time. Adding one product at a time makes it easier to identify the source if stinging, itching, or redness appears.
Combination skin
One gentle cleanser works across the full face. Adjust the amount of moisturizer by area, applying a slightly thicker layer to drier areas such as the cheeks and a thinner layer where skin tends to feel oily.
There is no need to use a harsher technique on the T-zone. Let the cleanser and water do the work, and rinse carefully around the hairline and the sides of the nose where residue can collect.
Match the routine to your workout timing
The time of day you work out determines which skin care steps you have already completed and which still need to happen. Use your existing morning or evening routine as the foundation and remove any steps you have already done.
After a morning workout
Cleanse, apply moisturizer, and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen if you are going outdoors. If you plan to apply makeup, allow your skin care products two to three minutes to absorb before starting.
After a lunchtime workout
Remove sweat and any makeup that has shifted, then reapply a light moisturizer. If you are returning outdoors, reapply sunscreen before you leave. Apply any makeup only after your skin has cooled and your products have settled.
After an evening workout
Use this cleanse to remove both the day's buildup and your workout residue, then follow with your regular nighttime moisturizer. If your skin feels warm or reactive, skip optional exfoliating or strong treatment steps for that night and return to them the following evening.
After an outdoor workout
Pay close attention to removing water-resistant sunscreen from the hairline, ears, and neck, where it accumulates and is easy to miss. After cleansing and moisturizing, apply a fresh layer of sunscreen if you will remain outside.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wash my face again before bed after an afternoon workout?
It depends on what has collected on your skin since the workout. If you reapplied sunscreen, wore makeup or became sweaty again, a gentle evening cleanse may make sense; if your skin is dry and you stayed indoors, follow how your skin feels and avoid unnecessary scrubbing.
Does my routine need to change after swimming?
Yes, rinse your face and body with fresh water when available, then cleanse gently and moisturize. Remove wet swimwear promptly, and reapply sunscreen according to its label if you are going back outside.
Can I put makeup on right after exercising?
You can, but wait until heavy sweating has slowed and your skin is clean and dry. Apply light layers so you can see how the makeup sits before adding more.
Why does sweat sting around my eyes?
Sweat can carry sunscreen, makeup or hair products toward the eye area. Rinse with clean water and avoid rubbing; seek medical guidance if discomfort continues or affects your vision.
What if my face stays red and hot after a workout?
Move to a cooler area, sip water and let your body settle. If redness is painful, lasts longer than is normal for you or comes with hives, dizziness, swelling or trouble breathing, seek prompt medical care.
